Unsupported document type — cannot be graded by Kairos OCR pipeline
Loose worksheets, arbitrary PDFs, and non-Kairos scans cannot be processed by the Kairos structured grading pipeline. Kairos OCR requires a Kairos-generated answer sheet with an embedded QR code.
What to do instead: If you want to create a gradable assignment from this document, use Magic Upload — it will extract the question structure, let you upload an answer key, and create a draft Kairos assignment. That draft can then be used to generate proper Kairos answer sheets for future OCR intake.

Document resolution
Kairos OCR-ready answer sheets contain an embedded QR code. When a scanned document is uploaded, Kairos reads the QR code to identify the session, course, student, and packet — no manual selection needed.

QR parsing — not yet connected to backend
When implemented, Kairos will read the QR code from each uploaded answer sheet and auto-resolve session, course, and student context. Until this is wired, uploaded documents are recorded as upload_pending and must be manually reviewed in the OCR Review Queue.
Manual fallback — for documents without QR or non-Kairos sources
Manual context is required only when a scanned document lacks a Kairos QR code. OCR results from manually-assigned documents will not have packet-level traceability.
Template validation
Each uploaded page is classified into one of four states based on QR detection and session matching. Only recognized Kairos pages can enter the OCR grading pipeline.
✓ Kairos template recognized
QR parsed — session, course, and student resolved automatically
0
⚠ Recognized — session mismatch
Kairos QR found but session or course does not match current context

✗ Unsupported — no QR detected
Non-Kairos document or missing identifier — cannot enter OCR pipeline

Validation — not yet wired to backend
When the QR parser service is connected, each page is classified automatically on upload. Until then all pages are recorded as awaiting validation. Unsupported pages must be sent to Magic Upload if you want to create a gradable Kairos assignment from them.
Upload zone
Upload scanned Kairos answer sheets. Each sheet must be a Kairos-generated template — QR code is required for automated student and session matching.

Live job tracking — not yet connected to backend
Job state updates are shown locally in this session only. When the OCR processing service is connected, states will persist in Firestore and update in real time. Teachers will receive an in-app notification when OCR review is ready — check the Review Queue manually until this is live.
